Place with a Bench

東都大学の沼津キャンパスはシティホテルを転用した前衛的な試みを実践している学校である。ホテルのような見た目を少しでも払拭し大学らしくなる提案をしてほしいという依頼を受けた。
そこで単なる装飾的なモニュメントで終わらせることのない、長い時間をかけて町や人々に対して良い変化をもたらせる建築的な居場所づくりはできないかと考えた。検討を重ねて生まれた計画は、縁台、塀、照明、造園、そして大学の看板だった。それらの5つの要素のバランスの取れた配置を慎重に検討し、関係性を持つ建築的な空間を生み出した。人が寛ぐ縁台があり、寄り添う塀があり、頭上には木陰を作る枝葉があり、照明による仄かな光が照らされる。するとそこは家のような親密な居場所となる。縁台は耐久力のあるイペ材でつくられており、単純な長方形の座面で奥行き60cm、幅2.5mと広めの設計として多人数で多用途に利用できる。大学が敷地の一部を地域に開放し、誰もが利用できる縁台で人と人が繋がってゆく。造園で植えた桜の木は移ろう季節を体感させながら街ゆく人々を見守ってくれるだろう。小さな計画ではあるが、縁台のある居場所から数多くの物語が生み出されることを願っている。
The Numazu Campus of Tohto University is a school that practices an avant-garde experiment in converting a city hotel into a university. We were asked to propose a proposal that would make it look a little less like a hotel and a little more like a university. We wondered if we could create a place that would not be merely a decorative monument, but an architectural place that would bring positive change to the town and its people over a long period of time. The plan that emerged from repeated consideration was a bench, a fence, lighting, landscaping, and a sign for the university. We carefully considered the well-balanced arrangement of these five elements and created an architectural space with a relationship between them. There is a bench for people to relax, a fence to cuddle up to, and branches and leaves overhead that provide shade, and are illuminated by the faint light from the lighting. The space then becomes an intimate place like a home. The university has opened a part of its site to the community, and the open-air bench, which can be used by anyone, connects people to each other. Cherry blossom trees planted in the landscaping will watch over the people on the street as they experience the changing seasons. Although it is a small project, we hope that many stories will be created from the place with the bench.
